Fine quality silver oak leaf construction, with “polished” borders and relief center vein. Excellent detailed swords, front and reverse. Marked “900” and “21”. (Made by Gebr. Godet & Co. in Berlin). Black leatherette case with slightly rounded corners. Narrow gilt stripe around edge of lid. Black fitted velvet interior and recessed area for the neck ribbon. White silk lined lid. Excellent condition. (As Commander of the 7th Panzer Division, in November 1943, Manteuffel added the Oak Leaves to his Knight’s Cross. His troops had recaptured the heavily fortified Soviet town of Shitomir. In 1944, as Commander of the elite “Grossdeutschland” Division he was awarded the “Swords” for his aggressive attacks in the Kiev salient. By December, Gen. Manteuffel was transferred to the Western Front and given command of the 5th Panzer Army. During the Ardennes Offensive his troops were short of fuel, ammunition and equipment, but still could claim some early successes. These accomplishments earned him the “Diamonds” to his Knight’s Cross. In 1975 Manteuffel gifted his Oak Leaves Swords to Donald Brownlow. Accompanying this historical cased award are: (1) Gen. Manteuffel business card with a typed “Dear Don, I send you herewith the Oak Leaves with The Swords from my Knights Cross – original because I received the next decoration: The Diamonds. Best wishes – Munich July 1975. H. Manteuffel”. With envelope. (2) Typed social letter to Mrs. Brownlow which includes “… I sent to Don the original case for Oak Leaves with Swords…” (apparently the case was forgotten during a Brownlow visit). Ink signed by Manteuffel. (3) Ink signed 5″ x 7″ photo of Manteuffel holding his decorations. (4) 5″ x 7″ photo of Manteuffel with signed letter and envelope. On June 6, 1944 Donald Brownlow arrived in Normandy with the second wave of American troops storming Utah Beach. By the end of WWII he had won 5 Battle stars, was wounded at the “Bulge”, was captured by the Waffen-SS and escaped, rose to the rank of Major and worked as an Intelligence Officer accumulating evidence for the Nurnberg War Crimes Trials. When he returned to the states he pursued a teaching career, built a serious collection, wrote 10 history books, and visited German military figures on yearly trips to Europe. His personal friendships included Hasso v. Manteuffel, Leni Reifenstahl, Adolf Galland, Lucile Jodl, Admiral Donitz and a host of Luftwaffe and Navy (U-Boat) Knight’s Cross recipients. The information acquired was added to his amazing knowledge which enhanced his formal and informal teaching of history. One of his former students stated “It always seemed to me that he was part of the history he was teaching”. A rare historical lot from the Maj. Donald G. Brownlow Collection. I
